Let’s hear from Branka herself.
Ever since I was a little girl, growing up in my beautiful Dolina Neretve, I was always watching my mother baking. Every time, she would let me lick the spoon when she was finished. My parents worked extremely hard. My father was a professional chef and had several jobs. Saturdays he would cook for weddings or other functions. Almost every summer, he would cook for over a thousand people at one time. He also cooked for the local parishes for celebrations when young men become priests.
I started baking with my mother and a little after that on my own. Almost every weekend we would have some sweets in the house. I left home and travelled to Australia for my cousin's wedding. I met my husband a few years later and was blessed with three beautiful children.
I started baking again because I enjoy it very much. When I bake, I feel closer to my beautiful homeland and everything I grew up with. Most importantly, I feel closer to my family and my mother in Croatia.

Cafe Marko was established after Marko, a qualified chef and barista, decided to open up his own café. From the fit-out to the menu, our café was formed to give those with and without Croatian roots an inviting atmosphere where they can enjoy gourmet food with a Croatian infusion alongside great coffee. (Side Note: Michael and I are obsessed with our coffee and we really enjoyed their coffee here!)
On offer, we have our traditionally prepared ćevapi, palačinke, pita and other traditional favourites. Our entire menu is available to be eaten inhouse, takeaway or ordered to cater for those special events. Since opening our doors, we have been a prominent meeting point for Croatians around Sydney and we are proud to have hosted events for various groups in our community and broadcasted many memorable Croatian soccer games in a way to bring the community together.

Thank you Marija Zelic for sharing a little bit about Dobar tek…
I started Dobar tek because of my love for what our mothers and grandmothers do in the kitchen and how it always brought happiness in the homes of us Croatians.
Moving so far from the motherland, the Croatians who immigrated to Australia and beyond, had to maintain culture through continuing various traditions. Life was very simple growing up; there was always an abundance of good food, drink, lots of singing, fun, and homemade cakes. I saw Dobar tek as a way of continuing the food element of our traditions, as much of our food you couldn’t find readily available.
When I was young I would always enjoy attending Croatian weddings, staying up past 4am, and seeing at these events all the wonderful kolaci the women would make; each one having their speciality. Dobar tek engages a few women who make our kolaci. This ensures what we offer is super fresh, and created by the hands of a specialist who love what they do, because anyone who has ever tried to make Croatian kolaci knows the effort required. It truly is a craft.
I love our heritage I want to see our culture and culinary traditions in the homes of many Australians. I want our culture to thrive and have continuity. I hope to achieve that through Dobar tek.

So most of us in our lifetime dream of a sea change or tree change but never actually do it. My sister and I are one of the crazy few that gave it a go so we moved from Sydney to Regional Gundagai. As luck has it, we landed the shop at the iconic Australian site ’The Dog on the Tucker Box’.
We knew the menu had to be fast to accommodate travellers and give the quintessential Australian food but when you’re Croatian you can’t help but give everyone a taste so we added Cevapi to our menu and they have been a hit with naturally ’Naši’ that drive through but also the fair dinkum locals! We are so incredibly humbled by the support of our new community and the hundreds of Hrvati passing through.

My name is Kristina and I’m a housewife, mum of 1 daughter and a self-taught Cake baker. I’ve learnt a lot from my own mother and other family members. I love cooking and baking and making people smile.
People hire me to make many types of Croatian Cakes for birthday parties and special events. I would say one of my most popular items is the Croatian cream cones. You can get in touch with me via Instagram or Facebook.
The Pita Projekt by Café Marko was established by Mateja, Marko’s wife. What began as a hobby, soon evolved into a way of cherishing tradition and introducing the customers at our café to this wonderful delicacy.
Born from the recipes and methods handed down from generations before us, we started offering pita as an in-house option and for catering before more recently introducing our frozen, bake at home pite. We currently offer Cheese, Cheese & Spinach, Potato, Meat, Apple, Cherry and Nutella.
The Pita Projekt is now mobile, serving up pita in our traditionally inspired food cart at pop-ups around Sydney. We are looking forward to using this avenue to offer onsite catering very soon as well.

I’m a self-taught home baker! I have a passion for baking speciality cakes. The čuturica is one of my favourite cakes, it’s so lifelike that you don’t want to cut into it. 😊
Some of them serve food regularly and some serve food along with Croatian functions. Be sure to check out their pages for more info:
